Vettes Gathered In Glendale

 

Chevrolet Corvettes have a special place at the annual Glendale Gathering. Set off to the side, up a closed off road, the Vettes come out in force to fill this special place at the event. Here are just a few of these sports cars from over the years that were on hand on a hot, muggy day.

German Cars Gathered In Glendale

 

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Germany. with the help of their Western allies, did a lot to re-build their country following World War II. One of the first and strongest industries to emerge was their automobile companies. It took a bit longer than some of the other European countries following the war but Germany began making in-roads in foreign markets including the United States. Making for affordable small entry level cars as well as luxury machines, the German companies soon were importing a lot of vehicles to America. Because of this there were a number of German cars on hand for the recent Glendale Gathering. Among them was a 1969 BMW 2002, a BMW M5, a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, a 1970 Mercedes Benz 280 SL, a 1969 Mercedes Benz 280 SL, and a Porsche 356.

U.K. Imports Gathered In Glendale

 

When American soldiers came home from Europe following World War II, many had some experience with the cars of that continent. The smaller, more nimble European sports cars intrigued many of them and the United Kingdom made it a point to build automobiles for the American market. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s the U.S. was importing a number of small cars, mostly from England. There were a nice selection of these on hand at the recent Glendale Gathering including a sweet Triumph TR3A, a 1958 Morris Minor, a Triumph TR6, an Austin Healey 3000, a Land Rover, another Triumph TR6, and a Jaguar XKR.

Some Really Old Cars Gathered In Glendale

 

Though the Glendale Gathering isn't a concours event it tends to attract a large number of vehicles that have been part of some of the regional concours shows. For instance there was this 1936 Pierce Arrow 1601 five passenger sedan that had shown at the 2012 Ault Park Concours d'Elegance. That wasn't the only really old car at this year's Gathering. Also on display was a 1934 Ford coupe, a Chevy coupe turned into a street rod, a 1924 Ford TT truck, a modified 1929 Ford, a concours winning 1935 Auburn Boattail Speedster, and a 1937 Plymouth Buisiness Coupe.

Sports Cars Gather In Glendale

 

The Glendale Gathering may not be the largest show in the region but it just might have the best line up this side of a concours event. As proof, take a look at some of the many sports cars that were on hand for this year's show. Among them was a Datsun 260Z, a Datsun 240 Z, a Dino 308 GT4, some Porsches from various years and a Ferrari.

The Glendale Gathering isn't one of the bigger old car events in the region but it definitely brings out a large number of very cool automobiles. Among them is always a strong contingent of Chevrolet Corvettes. In fact, the Vettes have their own section of the show where the more than 20 Chevy sports cars can reside. Here are just a few of these classics that were on hand for the show.

 

The Glendale Gathering

 

I'll be honest and admit that the Glendale Gathering is one of my favorite shows of the year. The event isn't huge, drawing just this side of 100 vehicles but, oh, those are some very nice vehicles. Because the event is put on by a group of people associated with the Cincinnati Concours d'Elegance so there are a lot of concours quality cars there. So for the next week and a half I'll be posting vehicles from this fabulous show. As part of that here is a fantastic Jaguar XJ6, a 1955 Pontiac Chieftain, an Edsel Pacer, a Chevy Camaro Super Sport, a Pontiac Trans Am Firebird, a Chevrolet Nova, and a 1967 Chevy II.
