Maxi Returns on the Mini Van

Also on display is a 1986 Dodge Caravan. The Caravan, along with its sister the Plymouth Voyager, was the first minivans, first introduced in 1983. Designed to have more cargo space than a station wagon but to fit inside a standard garage, they were geared to families in suburbia.
The brain trust behind the Chrysler foray into the development of the minivan, Lee Iacocca and Hal Sperlich, originally devised the idea of a “family” van when they were both with Ford. Henry Ford II nixed the idea and when they both jumped ship to Chrysler, they created one of the company’s biggest selling auto styles. In a way, they are the Holy Grail of soccer moms across the country.
