Among the more than 100 cars that showed up at the Downtown Throw Down were several belonging to friends of mine. In fact, this 1963 Avanti is the newest member of my friend Don's garage. Regular followers of this blog may have seen Don's Studebaker Hawk on more than one occasion. He told me that he had literally gotten this Avanti just a couple days before the show. The Raymond Lowery designed car was one of the last hopes of saving the struggling Indiana firm. Powered by a 289 cubic inch V8 that generated 240 brake horsepower, the Avanti was marketed as "America's only four passenger high performance personal car." While the car won rave reviews it didn't do what the heads of Studebaker had hoped. The plant in South Bend closed in December, 1963.
Other cars on display included a Chevy Bel Air wagon, a Ford Galaxie 500, a Porsche 356, a 1983 Ford F250 pick up truck, a Thunderbird, and more.
