The Chevrolet Corvair has gotten a bad rap through the years. It was featured in a book by activist Ralph Nader called Unsafe At Any Speed which took a harsh look at the safety records of American cars. Chevy introduced the rear, air cooled engine powered Corvair in 1960 as an entry level economy car and for 10 years sold over 200,000 models. Nader's book cited examples of what he concluded was the car's safety flaws. Based on that there were many law suits against parent company General Motors. Interestingly the attorney who was the lead lawyer for GM in those cases was the uncle of one David Power, a man most people know of as J.D. Power (yes that J.D. Power). Fortunately there are still a number of Corvairs still around and a group of them took part in the 65th Vintage and Classic Car Parade.
Whether they're the great classics, ultimate collectors, overlooked and forgotten, or even brand new cars I want to talk about them. Feel free to leave a comment or, better yet, drop me an email at turnerbudds@yahoo.com.
