Though the car was developed in the 1930s to be the "people's car" and allow all Germans the right of automobile ownership, it was following World War II that saw Volkswagen and its iconic Type 1, known affectionately as the Beetle, become a major power in the global automobile market. Essentially rescued and re-opened by the British following the war, the VW plant began making cars and by 1946 they were producing 1000 per month. The car became a hit all over the world, even forcing the Big Three Detroit auto makers to begin making smaller cars in order to compete. With so many imported to the US it's little wonder that there were plenty on hand for the 47th Pumpkin Run Nationals at the Clermont County Fair Grounds. While most were the basic Beetle, there were a number that had been used to create all new cars. Here are some of them.
(NOTE: My brother and I turned a wrecked Beetle into a Baja buggy similar to the one above. Yes, we got into all sorts of trouble with that car.)
