Corvettes Came To Fernbank Park For Some Rollin'

Following World War II there was an influx of sporty European automobiles that came to America. U.S. service personnel had seen and even driven some of these small sports cars that were so different from the vehicles they were used to. Soon, cars from England, Germany and Italy were coming to the states. In an effort to hold onto some of that market, General Motors' Chevrolet division introduced their own little two seat sports car in 1953. The Corvette, named after the smallest class of war ship was designed to do battle against the imports. There were problems with the first generation, particularly with the power plant, which started out as a 150 horse power inline six called the Blue Flame. It wasn't enough and by 1955 Chevy was offering a 265 cubic inch V8. This did the trick and the Vette started selling and selling well. Now in its eighth generation, the Vette is recognized as one of the top sports cars out there. Perhaps that is why there are always so many at Rollin' On the River held in Fernbank Park. Here are just some of the Corvettes that were on hand for the 34th edition of this charity car show.
