Volkswagen Came Rollin' For Charity

Established in Germany in 1937, Volkswagen was first famed for developing "the People's Car." The Type 1, known to all as the Beetle, was designed to be what the name implied, a car for the people. Featuring seating for four (or five as claimed) and sporting an air cooled four cylinder engine mounted in the rear, the car was mostly designed by Ferdinand Porsche (whose son, Ferry, would develop their namesake company into a world renown firm). While Beetles still show up at car events across America, there are others such as the Type 181 or the Thing, shown here. There is also the multi-purpose Type 2 commercial vehicle, probably best known in the states during the 1960s as a "shag wagon." A good selection of Volkswagens showed up for the 34th Rollin' On the River Charity Car Show this past summer. Here are a few of them.
