Peterson Automotive Museum

There are a lot of places around the United States that could, and perhaps should, host an automotive museum. One of the largest, fittingly, is in Los Angeles, a city that has been defined by its car culture. The Peterson Automotive Museum boasts over 300,000 square feet of space with more than 150 cars and exhibits on display.

Located at 6060 Wilshire Blvd. at the corner of Fairfax, the museum was the dream of Margie and Robert E. Peterson who gave the initial financial donation in 1994 and have since contributed over $30 million to the museum foundation.

The museum covers four floors with many of the exhibits designed for visitors to walk through and not just by. The first floor features permanent exhibits that trace the history of the automobile and its contribution to early Los Angeles. The second floor presents houses five rotating galleries dealing with race cars, classic cars, vintage motorcycles, concept cars, celebrity and movie cars, and automobile design and technology.

On the third floor is the May Family Discovery Center which deals with the science of the automobile. It is a 6500 square foot, interactive hands-on learning center that teaches basic scientific principles to children by explaining the basic functions of a car.

There is a conference center, lounge and kitchen on the fourth floor which is available for special events and functions. Look at their web site at http://petersen.org/ and if you’re in the Los Angeles area, stop in and see some amazing vehicles for yourself.
