Antiques at Dayton

The earliest classics are always of interest at any Concours event and the Dayton Concours d'Elegance was no exception. The Antiques through 1929 featured an amazing 1911 Marmon Model 32 Speedster.
Another Marmon, this one a 1925 Model D-74 was also on display. Joining the Marmons were a 1914 Ford Model T Touring, a 1922 Oldsmobile Touring 43-A, a 1910 Oakland '30' 24 Runabout, a 1928 Chevrolet Landau Coup, a 1909 Buick Model 10, a 1920 Ford Model T Touring, and a brilliant  1920 Cleveland 40 Touring Car.

Happy Thanksgiving

I would like to take a moment to give thanks to everyone who stops by and browses through this blog. I started it a number of years ago with my youngest son who had gotten into classic cars as something the two of us could do together. While he'll still go to shows with me from time to time he is now a 21-year-old college student with other things in his life.

Some of you may have noticed that I do not run ads. It probably wouldn't matter as I don't get enough hits to really earn much anyway. I just love cars. My day gig is the owner of a small media production company and I have shot and published hundreds of photographs (perhaps thousands) as part of that. In addition to all of the video, film, web materials, writing, music and any other form of media that I have done over the year, photos are still some of my favorite. Photos of classic cars? Well, how can you top that.

So for all of you in the USA, Happy Thanksgiving! For the many of you who stumble across my blog from other countries, I give thanks for your interest. I don't check the analytics very often but when I do it always surprises me where people are browsing from. Since summer I have had a lot of people from France, Ukraine, Australia, India, Germany, England, Poland, Malaysia, China, Switzerland, Canada, Russia, Spain, and Latvia. And those are just a random listing of the tops behind the US. I thank you all.

So on this purely American holiday, take a moment to give thanks for all of the wonderful things in your life. And don't forget giving thanks for your favorite classic car. Happy Thanksgiving. As always, feel free to leave me a comment or if you want a reply, send me an email at turnerbudds@yahoo.com.

Woodies and the Class of 64

One of the things that I love about the Dayton Concours d'Elegance is that they have some categories that don't exist at other Concours events. For example, they have a small category dedicated to Woodies and this year, another dedicated to cars from the Class of 1964. Since these were both very small categories I am combining them into one post. To lead things off is a 1936 Ford Woody.

Also on display was a very unique 1950 Martin Stationette, a 1953 Ford Woody wagon, a 1964 AC Cobra (the real deal, not a kit), a 1964 Corvette, and a 1964 Pontiac LeMans.

68-73 GTOs at Dayton

The Dayton Concours d'Elegance featured two classes for Pontiac's GTO in honor of its birthday. The GTO, Grand Turismo Omolagato, was inspired by Ferrari's famed 250 GTO. The 1968 through 1973 models on display included this 1969 version.

Also on display was this 1968 convertible that was bought in 2006 for $700 and restored, a 1969 GTO Judge, a 1972 model with a 455 HO engine, a 1968 with hideaway headlights, and a 1969 example.

Early GTOs at Dayton

The Dayton Concours d'Elegance had a fantastic display celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pontiac's wonderful GTO. The GTO was one of John DeLoreon's babies and was unveiled in 1964. On display was this beautiful 1964 convertible.
Other early examples of the GTO included this 1967 convertible, a one owner 1967 model that was the owner's first car, a 1966 convertible that won gold at the GTO Nationals, a 1967 model that has been owned by the same person for 34 years, a 1964 number matching GTO Nationals gold winner, a
one owner 1966 model, a 1965 model with Stock Rally II wheels, and a 1965 convertible.

Maserati at Dayton

The Dayton Concours d'Elegance offered up a special class in honor of the 100th birthday of the Maserati. With such a high demand for all Maseratis this summer because of the birthday the folks at Dayton had some trouble finding a lot of suitable cars that met their criteria. The ones they found, though, were spectacular, including a 1972 Ghibli Spider SS 4.9.

Also gleaming in the sun for this exhibit were a 1964 3500 GT Spyder, a 1967 Ghibli, a 2010 Gran Turismo S, and a 2006 Gransport LE.

The Carillon Park Collection

The Dayton Concours d'Elegance is held in Carillon Historical Park, a 65 acre park just south of downtown dedicated to the city's lush history. As part of the permanent collection of the park is a group of early automobiles that all have a tie to the Dayton area. Housed in one of the many period buildings in the park, this is a pleasant surprise for any car fan who happens to be visiting.
