When it was introduced in 1953 by General Motors' Chevrolet division, the world was only eight years removed from World War II. To compete with the small European sports cars that were flooding into the country, GM and Chevy wanted a true sports car with a name that would identify it as such. With WW II still in the rear view mirror they chose the name Corvette. A corvette is a small, maneuverable warship, in fact the smallest to be classified as a warship. Most people have since forgotten the nautical meaning of the word but very few can forget the car bearing that name. In fact, of the over 500 vehicles on hand for the 33rd Annual Rollin' On the River Car Show sponsored by the Delhi Kiwanis and held at lovely river front Fernbank Park, Vettes represented the single largest block of cars. Here are some that were on display.
