"People Give Us the Thumbs Up"

When Cliff and Jene Barnes of Mt. Orab, OH stumbled across an old car sitting in a barn they were interested. The car had been sitting there for a while. It belonged to the barn owner’s son who no longer wanted it. But since the car didn’t have a gas tank it became a bit of a trick to get it started just to see if the motor would actually run.
According to Jene, the owner had a can of gas sitting on the passenger side floor and ran the fuel line directly into it. Sure enough the motor caught and fired up. So on that day in 1997 the Barnes’ decided to invest in this old car, paying $700.
What they had was a 1953 Mercury Monterey two door hard top.
It took them 10 years to restore the car, working from the ground up. Now they show it at car events all over the region. But their fun isn’t limited to just taking it out on a weekend to be enjoyed and judged.
“We drive it,” said Jene. “That’s the fun of it. Driving along. People give us the thumbs up.”
So keep an eye out for this decade long restoration project and if you see them, be sure to give them a thumbs up.
