Roger Whitaker and I are Facebook friends. It’s little surprise since we have a lot in common. First off his name, Roger, is my middle name; it is an old Turner family name that we’ve traced back to before this country was even a country.
Perhaps the strongest bond we have is a passion for classic cars. But there’s a pretty big difference between us when it comes to this shared passion. You see, Roger is one of the type of person who has the talent to take a rundown, once majestic automobile, and turn it back into a work of art.
He sent me a note recently after seeing a recent entry in this blog about a 1955 Chevy Belair. As I stated in that post the ’55 was a true game changer. It not only stepped up Chevy’s image and style but it also affected just about everything that was coming out of Detroit at the time.
For Roger, his ’55 Belair was a two year labor of love. A true custom ride, Roger told me this beauty purrs with the help of a custom 388 stroker under the hood. To see the visual record of the rebuilt, Roger gave me the link to Car Domain page where he posted his ’55. Take a couple minutes and check it out: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2658843/1955-chevrolet-bel-air.
In addition to the Belair, Roger has what he calls his “twin.” It’s a renovated and chopped ’55 Chevy CK pick up. Take a look at this link on Car Domain and read a little of what he’s done to this beauty: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2920607/1955-chevrolet-c-k-pick-up.
Looking through these pics it’s easy to see what Roger’s favorite color is for his cars. Red means fast and that’s something Roger is used to. He also owns a ’62 Chevy II that, while it’s actually street legal, he refers to as his dragster. Nicknamed “Lil Deuce,” you can check out this baby’s story on Car Domain right here: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2658990/1962-chevrolet-chevy-ii.
So if you’re ever out in Kansas and you see some prime classic Chevys rolling along the road, give the driver a wave, it just might be Roger.
WoW Roger you made the big time. We will be calling you the Red Road Runner. Jay
